Artist Profiles » David Ardley

David Ardley"I romanticise and imagine when I paint. The scenes I portray reflect the beauty and serenity of our natural world. I seek to capture a special moment and make it last forever. I will take you on a journey – where you will experience the absolute allure of being immersed in crystal clear water, surrounded by exquisite shell and marine life."

Born in 1951 David Ardley was raised and educated on the California coastline. From a young age David began his love affair with the ocean, becoming a surfer and being dazzled with the beauty of the sea. As a teenager his artistic talents emerged and he started specialising in airbrush design on surfboards and motorcycles and found employment in Santa Cruz.

In 1974, David emigrated to New Zealand where he moved to a beachside house and started a family. Being surrounded by an inspiring, pristine marine environment moved David to continue his artistic passion, and he experimented with many painting techniques. His amazing talent is particularly evident in his realistic depictions, capturing the beauty and mood of his subjects.

David paints on canvas using the highest quality resin oil paints applied in numerous glazes in a similar way to the ‘Old Masters’. David is a frequent visitor to many countries including Australia, Hawaii and the Pacific Islands, where he is able to utilise his other talent for underwater photography. From these photographs and his extensive shell collection, he is able to paint glorious underwater scenes, and depict them accurately.

His work now hangs in collections in New Zealand, Australia, California, Japan, Holland, Hong Kong and Hawaii.
