Artist Profiles » John Munro

John MunroJohn Munro was born on the North Shore of Auckland. He is currently living in North Auckland where he has a studio. He prefers to work on his sculptures outside and will only work inside in extreme weather. “I first got into sculpting Oamaru stone about five years ago while working with stone to build water-features. Some friends who were providing other stones also had a fairly large piece of Oamaru stone that they gave me. I found the material a delight to work with and have enjoyed it ever since”. John is influenced by the shapes and forms found in nature like the Koru, the spiral and the human form. He has a particular affinity to Oamaru stone finding the variations in colour and texture a constant challenge and often an impetus to the beginning of a sculpture. The ‘Rosebud’ series was influences by nature and the human form, “This abstract piece had three sources of inspiration; a flower, the flow of a piece of fabric and also a female figure (the last influence is more strongly observable from other angles). John’s sculptures can be placed inside or outside. As a garden sculpture they will change colour and appearance with the elements and in John’s opinion become more beautiful. John is able to sculpt many different forms and is a good choice for commissioning a special piece.
