Artist Profiles » Robyn Barclay and Wayne Sinclair

Robyn Barclay and Wayne Sinclair Robyn and Wayne met when Robyn attended an art class held by Wayne, their relationship blossomed and since then the couple have enjoyed one of New Zealand’s most successful artistic partnerships. “For us traveling to Europe was a natural progression of our painting careers, we were searching for new material and influences.”

Wayne has painted professionally since 1972, specializing in mainly New Zealand and European subjects and has won many major New Zealand art awards. Wayne studied painting overseas and as a result of these travels, European scenes have continued to be a source of inspiration. Robyn has been painting full time since 1997. Robyn has won major art awards, and taught adult art classes.

Wayne describes his style as a combination of Impressionistic and Representational styles and Robyn’s as Colour Impressionistic. “Up until Robyn traveled to Europe her paintings had been of New Zealand landscapes which had quite a limited palette, for her as a painter to experience the vibrant colours of Italy and France it was like the catalyst for a whole new body of work.”

Wayne loves traveling to the small villages in Europe where most of his subject matter is found. “It is the everyday scenes of life in these small villages that inspire me, the old man with his donkey on the way to the fields, the old ways of life that still exist in these corners of Europe”, says Wayne Sinclair

To Robyn it is the movement and colour of people on the streets that inspires her, “I’m fascinated by the way Europeans socialize, the gathering on the street, the square or the corner café. The streets are alive with people leading their lives in these beautiful settings."
