Artist Profiles » Eliza Sagar

Eliza SagarEliza Sagar began drawing at age two and hasn't really stopped since. Writing, her other passion, also began fairly early, in the form of simple stories that multiplied at as fast a pace as the drawings, so that before long there were cupboards and desks full of paper, kindly preserved by her encouraging, indulgent artist-mother!

After leaving high school, Sagar continued painting and drawing while doing her BA in English Literature and Japanese at Auckland University. On completing the BA she travelled to Japan and Europe where she backpacked with her acrylic paints in tow, and a large roll of paper attached to the side of her pack, painting wherever she could. When she returned to New Zealand she applied for art school at the ASA in Ponsonby, and began freelance mural-painting to pay for the further study. After doing a first year of a BVA at the ASA she transferred into the BFA programme at Otago Polytechnic School of Art in Dunedin, where she graduated from the degree with a major in Painting in 1999.
She held her first large solo exhibition "Without-Within" at Artemis gallery in Morningside, Auckland, in 2000.

The following year she travelled again, this time to South Korea and on to Thailand and Southern and Eastern Europe where she painted as she went. These paintings were to form the basis of her next solo exhibition "Elsewhere" at the Depot in Devonport, Auckland.
In 2004 she returned to study at Auckland University part time, while continuing to paint, and after taking time off for family reasons, completed her Honours in English Literature.
Presently she is painting, writing, tutoring English Literature, and working part-time in an art gallery.

Her most recent award for painting was The Pumphouse Art Award, in 2003.
