Artist Profiles » Ian Hamlin

Ian HamlinBorn in 1960, Ian received his early art training in Upper Hutt and Greymouth to Fine Arts Preliminary level. Opting to paint full-time rather than attend art school, he was competent enough to hold his first exhibition at the age of 18. Every painting sold from his first display and he repeated the feat the following year. He has continued to exhibit successfully ever since.

Living at various times on the West Coast, Dunedin, Perth and the Marlborough Sounds, he has recently settled back in Wellington, where he exhibits in major galleries. He also exhibits throughout the country and in the UK. Ian has spent some time painting overseas with considerable distinction and has held exhibitions in Australia and the UK. He was also given the rare opportunity to exhibit at the 1990 International Art Fair at the Barbicon Centre in London.

Although predominantly an oil painter, Ian also works in pastel and watercolour. His paintings are well known for their attention to detail, whether in panoramic view or intimate study. In recent years, a variety of styles have been emerging in his work, although the effects of light on atmosphere remain the major focus.

“This meticulous artist has a rare talent of being able to combine an exquisite use of light with brilliant and subtle colours; the results speak more eloquently than we are able to in our description.” - Max Beer, Lewis Paape Gallery

Since 1978, he has held over 20 solo exhibitions throughout New Zealand and overseas. He is represented in private collections world-wide as well as in major corporate collections, and was recently honoured with Artist membership of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts.

“Drawing inspiration from the great painters of light and a sense of place, I’m trying in my paintings to communicate through a sense of “being there” to the contemplation of something beyond the subject itself.”

“If I could say it in words, there’d be no need to paint.” - Edward Hopper
