Artist Profiles » Lyndon Stokes

Lyndon Stokes1962 Born in Hamilton, New Zealand. Raised in a creative environment by professional artist parents, Val and Trevor Stokes. Art materials were readily available and drawing and painting were regular pastimes

1976-79 High school education saw top scores in School cert art. Art history taken for UE as practical art took up huge amounts of time at the expense of other subjects

1989 A part time Graphics course made me realise my main motivation was in illustrating and not Graphics!

1990 Toured USA, UK and Europe. I was influenced by contemporary and historic art I saw. Picturesque and historic areas I visited were to influence future landscapes and surreal scenes

During these years produced a small amount of work and entered in group exhibitions such as the Lion Breweries Art Awards. Main area of interest was Surrealism.

1994 Finalist in James Wallace Art Awards, Auckland

1995 First solo exhibition at WSA Gallery, Hamilton

1996 1999 - Continued painting a fairly low number of high detail surreal works as commissions and some gallery pieces. Due to the time consuming nature of the work sometimes less than half a dozen pieces a year completed

1999 Second half of this year dedicated to painting automotive art for car industry clients and surreal pieces for the advertising industry (jeans)

1999 2002 Continued painting a low number of high detail surreal works as commissions and some gallery pieces. Exhibited in galleries in Hamilton, Auckland, Whitianga and overseas for the first time at Sanctuary Cove, Queensland

2003 A lifestyle change resulted in more time being available to paint so as to increase production and indulge more creativity in my life! Continuing in a variety of styles with main interests being cars and surrealism involving marine subjects. A continuing demand for surreal commissions is great but time consuming and can make it difficult to maintain a profile in galleries

My work is currently held in collections in New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States.
