Artist Profiles » Sally Lush

Sally LushI was born and grew up in Auckland, in a large extended family, where independence and adventuring were strongly encouraged. From the age of 13, I went on canoeing and sailing expeditions along with my brother and cousins, exploring the harbours and coastlines of New Zealand.

In my 20s, after studying Chemistry and working in the Science Industry for a number of years, I left New Zealand to travel around the world. I spent eight years visiting great art galleries, museums, churches and ruins, soaking up history, art and culture.

Although being a latecomer to the art scene, in the last ten years I have been a director of two successful Auckland galleries. I gained knowledge of concrete sculpting through a course run by Auckland sculptor, Pardo Jackson. I have studied painting under James Lawrence and prefer to paint in acrylics. Through trial and error, my own techniques and style have evolved in both my sculpture and painting.

My strongest influences came during my travels. The Moorish architecture in Spain and Northern Africa, the temples in Boudnath, Kathmandu, the Byzantine churches in Turkey and Greece and the cairns of stones in the Himalayan mountain passes (each person who passes through adds another rock onto the stack with a blessing a living, changing sculpture) can be glimpsed in my sculptures.

My acrylic paintings are inspired by the weathered corrugated iron sheds , with peeling layers of multicolored paint that are scattered throughout the New Zealand countryside and the vibrant , irridescent blues, mauves and greens in layers on the paua shell. Recent paintings are inspired by a sense of place, I like to see beauty in the most unlikely of places, landforms, weathering, rust, decay and even eroded mud running across a black sand beach.
I live on a lifestyle block north of Auckland with my husband, my young son, lots of animals and a garden full of sculptures and roses.
